AFC Confirms Iran’s Participation in the 2026 World Cup

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has confirmed that the Iran national football team remains on course to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite recent speculations about a possible withdrawal due to political tensions and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

The statement came from the AFC Secretary General, Windsor John, who emphasized that the confederation has not received any official notification regarding Iran’s potential withdrawal from the tournament.

Speaking at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur, John said:
"Iran is an active member of the AFC, and we want them to participate. As far as we know, they will compete in the World Cup."

He added that the recent rumors reflect heightened emotions due to the current political situation, stressing that the final decision regarding participation rests solely with the Iranian Football Federation, not any external party.

The Secretary General concluded by noting that the Iranian Football Federation has officially informed the AFC of its intention to participate, ensuring that the Iran national football team remains among the qualified teams for the 2026 World Cup unless an official change is announced.
